Privacy Policy for Carbon AI Hub
Last Updated: May 12, 2026
1. Introduction
At Carbon AI Hub, we believe that tracking your environmental footprint shouldn't mean leaving a digital one. This policy explains how we handle your data while you measure your AI carbon impact.
2. Data We Collect (And What We Don't)
- No Text Logging: We never read, store, or transmit the content of your prompts or AI responses.
- Data Minimization: We only track metadata (model names, token counts, and timestamps) to calculate your footprint.
- Account Data: If you opt-in to cloud-sync, we store your email address solely to manage your account and sync your history across devices.
- Local Storage: For non-sync users, all tracking data remains strictly on your local device.
- Zero Sale: We do not sell or share your personal information or usage data with third parties.
- User Control: You can delete your account and all associated data at any time via the settings menu.
3. How Data is Processed
- Local-First Architecture: To ensure maximum privacy, all calculations are performed locally in your browser.
- Zero-Sale Policy: We never sell your usage data to third parties. Your environmental impact is your business.
4. Chrome Permissions Explained
To function, the extension requires the following permissions:
- storage: To save your daily and monthly carbon totals so you can track your progress over time.
- tabs or scripting: To detect when you are on a supported AI platform (e.g., Gemini, ChatGPT) and calculate the data volume.
5. Third-Party Services
Carbon estimates are based on published research from sources including the Stanford AI Index, Google and Microsoft sustainability reports, and peer-reviewed papers on LLM energy use. We are not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, or any other AI provider; their own privacy policies apply to your conversations on their platforms.
6. Your Rights
Depending on your location (such as the UK or EU), you have the right to:
- Request a copy of your tracked data.
- Delete all locally stored history via the "Clear Data" button in the extension settings.
- Opt-out of any anonymized telemetry.
